
. . . it certainly made me begin thinking about the issue of Martian Sovereignty. For me, the news item raised serious questions about who is going to claim Mars as it's territory. It seems likely there'll be a landing within 10-15 years, and it is practically certain that the US will at least lead the mission. Will the US then claim Mars for itself? Or for the world? Reaching Mars is a technical problem which deserves the attention it is now being given, but surely how a Martian colony would be administered, how its political, economic, social and ecological systems would operate, deserves equal attention. I'd personally like to see the future political system of the Red Planet being discussed in the international forum of the Net, and I think it could attract significant world-side attention if promoted as "an important issue". I came across your very elegant website while looking for signs of similar discussion online, and I'd be interested in your thoughts--should you be able to spare the time. Thanks.
