Vice President Al Gore Space Program Support
Dear Mr. Gore, I write to you today as a distressed citizen, concerned and disappointed by the dwindling federal support of one of our country's greatest agencies: NASA. There is no need for me to waste time filling this letter with the type of scientific data your expert aides will have on hand - and have hopefully already badgered you with - the merits of our Space Program in this arena speak for themselves. What seems to have been forgotten in the never ending battle over appropriation of funds is that NASA, thanks to the unerring dedication of the good folks within the agency, represents more to the common person than a scientific luxury. What about the facts that NASA'S achievements have brought generations of hope, dreams and the determination to aspire...to learn...to fulfill man's natural need to explore...and to have this available to our children? What about a united national goal? Raising awareness of the Space Program is imperative, it is what we, the people, are about! I realize this has been said before, but I wonder if you have heard it from the us, the voters? I speak for literally millions when I say we want a stronger Space Program, and the monies funneled toward this end. A good start would be a line on our tax forms, giving us the option to contribute tax dollars towards space exploration We need leadership with the guts and political clout to make this happen. What NASA could achieve, given full White House support, with global participation and publicity, could carry this nation with heads held high into the next millennium. Are you aware of the fact that over two million people visited the Jet Propulsion Lab Website in January 1997 alone? Surely this must indicate the sheer number of interested people. After all, in order to even want to explore the JPL one must be one of the more advanced "space buffs"...if you checked with some of the more well known NASA sites you would not only be astounded, but have some rock solid numbers to offer Congress. I don't know who you poll when you do polls, but the truth is here; in these numbers. You campaigned on the issues of bringing this country boldly into the next century; here is the perfect platform. Can you rise to this? I am challenging you to do just that! Sincerely, SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY |
