Adam glanced up to see Naoki's data stream still churning. Hmmm... its taking a while. Maybe he would have to uplink to SatLab's computer for its additional analytical capabilities. He turned to continue his study.

He hoped that Cheryl and Naoki would be able to work it out so that they could be at the conference, too. It would be another 4 months before everyone gathered to discuss and compare notes at the bi-annual Aeroformation Progress Conference held at Sharanov Dome. He had enjoyed the last one immensely.

It had been quite heartening when the late 20th century time capsule archived at Viking Memorial Station had been opened and the enclosed "Letters from home." had been released to the conference's main auditorium PlanetNet link. Spirits ran high that afternoon as the words, video and music that the time capsule stored swept through the auditorium.

One letter in particular had captured all attention.

To the people of Mars:

I am writing this as we await Pathfinder's first live Earthwide broadcast from the surface of Mars. The anticipation and excitement I and others feel as we wait is almost unbearable. Pathfinder has landed safely and we are told that the down link will begin in another 57 minutes. We on Earth will then see what Pathfinder is seeing! What you can see year round. It is incredible to me that humanity is taking these steps to explore the universe. I am reminded of a passage in an article I read just yesterday.

"We are on Earth for now, but we will not be confined to Earth forever. We will meet the universe on its terms and be considerably enriched by the meeting."

Everyone with me today has such a passion for taking the next step -- colonizing Mars. I am 47 years of age now and can only hope that I will see this realized in my lifetime. It is very possible.

If you on Mars are reading / hearing / seeing this now, that means that the quest of the passionate few, for humanity's expansion into the space outside of Earth's protective envelope, will have become the quest of the passionate many. We will have risen above the hurdles ahead and continued our climb to the stars.

I feel a great sense of history in the making. Even though humanity's existence has been tumultuous, at our best we are capable of moving forward and bettering that which we touch. I feel a swell of emotion that is laced with pride and tears of joy as I imagine what it might be like to be on the receiving end of these "Letters from home." -- letters from a distant planet -- humanity's birth world. God bless each and every one of you as you continue the grand experiment -- adding humanity to the Stars.

It is now only another 17 minutes until broadcast.

See you on Mars.
